How to get the most out of your Habita Scout
Your Habita Scout works through a standard checklist on every tour, and you can add your own requests on top of it. The more specific the request and the earlier you send it, the more useful the report. Message your Scout once they accept, ask for things they can see, hear, and measure, and ask about the area.
When can I message my Scout?
You can message your Scout once they accept your tour. Until then, messaging stays closed. When the Scout submits your report, the thread becomes read-only. Send your requests right after the Scout accepts, while there is still a visit to shape.
| Stage | Can you send a message? |
|---|---|
| Tour booked, Scout has not answered yet | No. Messaging opens when your Scout accepts. |
| Scout accepted, visit not done | Yes. This is the best time to send requests. |
| Report submitted | No new messages. You can still read the thread. |
Habita expects Scouts to reply within 24 hours while the tour is open. Overnight hours do not count toward that. Put what you already know into the tour request when you book, and use messages for anything you think of afterward. The full flow is on the how it works page.
How specific should my requests be?
Specific enough that your Scout can answer by looking, listening, or measuring. "Is it quiet?" leaves them guessing what quiet means to you. "Stand in the bedroom with the windows shut, then open them, and tell me what you hear" gives them something to do and report.
| Vague ask | Specific ask | What you get back |
|---|---|---|
| Is it quiet? | Stand in the bedroom with the windows shut, then open them. What do you hear? | A description of the noise at the time of the visit |
| Is the kitchen okay? | Run the tap and each burner. Photo of the cabinet under the sink. | Notes on what worked and a look at the wear |
| Is parking easy? | Where would my car go, and how far is it from the front door? Is there visitor parking? | A distance and a description of the actual spot |
| Is there good light? | Which way do the living room windows face? Photo of the room with the lights off. | A direction and a photo at the time of the visit |
| Is the water pressure good? | Run the shower and the kitchen tap together. Describe the pressure. | A report of how the pressure held up |
| Will my couch fit? | Measure the front door and the width of the hallway. | Numbers you can compare to your furniture |
Not sure what to ask for? Start from the questions to ask before signing a lease you have not seen and what listing photos do not show.
What local questions can I ask my Scout?
Ask about what your Scout can see and walk. Scouts know their part of LA, so questions about the walk to the nearest grocery store, where parking fills up, and how loud the street is at the visit time get real answers. Questions about safety or who lives nearby do not, and Scouts will not answer them.
- How long is the walk to the nearest grocery store and the nearest Metro stop?
- What does parking on the block look like at the time you visit?
- What can you hear from inside the unit: a freeway, construction, a nearby business?
- If the building has no laundry, where is the closest laundromat?
- Where are the trash and recycling bins, and how far are they from the front door?
- Does your phone get a signal inside the unit?
If you want a closer look at the surrounding blocks, ask about the Area Check add-on when you book.
What should I send my Scout before the visit?
Send your priorities in order, a screenshot of anything in the listing you want confirmed, and any measurements that matter to you. Your Scout works from a standard checklist covering condition, noise, light, and access, and you can add your own items on top of it. Keep income, credit, and employment details out of the thread.
- 1Your priorities, ranked, so your Scout knows what to spend time on if the visit runs short.
- 2A screenshot or a note for any listing photo you want confirmed, such as "the listing shows a window over the sink. Is it there?"
- 3The size of your largest piece of furniture, if fit is a concern.
- 4Your move-in date, and whether you want video of anything in particular.
What if my Scout can't answer something?
Your report says so. Scouts note access limits, locked rooms, and anything they could not verify, with the reason. That counts as information. A locked laundry room or a balcony the Scout could not reach tells you what to ask the property manager before you apply.
Ask the property manager about anything the Scout could not see. If the thread is still open, you can also ask your Scout whether they can check it from another angle. If the item matters to your decision, hold your application until you have an answer.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I message my Scout after the report is submitted?
No. Once the Scout submits your report, the thread is read-only. You can still read everything in it. Send your requests while the tour is open, and use the tour request at booking for what you already know.
Can my Scout negotiate with the landlord or tell me whether to sign?
No. Scouts report what they observe during the tour. They do not make leasing decisions for you, negotiate, or give legal advice. The decision stays with you.
Can I ask my Scout to check something that is not on the checklist?
Yes. Add it when you book, or message your Scout after they accept. They will check what can be seen, heard, or measured on the visit, and the report will say so if something could not be verified.
How quickly will my Scout reply to messages?
Habita expects Scouts to reply within 24 hours while the tour is open. Overnight hours do not count toward that window.
Can I rate my Scout?
Yes. After you confirm your report arrived, you can leave a rating from 1 to 5 stars with an optional comment, and you can edit it later. Your Scout can see the rating you leave.
